A small white SANSA propeller plane parked on a remote jungle-and-beach airstrip

Cargo & courier, coast to coast.

SANSA moves packages and documents to all thirteen destinations — often the same day — riding on our passenger network. If our planes fly there, your parcel can too.

    What you can ship

From a passport to a pallet of fresh fish.

Our couriers handle the everyday parcels that keep coastal businesses and remote lodges running — moving in hours what the road moves in a day.

    Documents & parcels

Contracts, ID cards, legal papers, keys and small packages — sealed in a courier envelope or box and flown to the coast the same afternoon. The everyday backbone of our cargo service.

    Perishables & lab samples

Fresh fish and seafood, produce, flowers, vaccines and time-sensitive medical or lab samples travel fast in insulated packaging. Speed is the whole point — a short flight keeps a cold chain intact.

    E-commerce & business supply

Online orders, restaurant and hotel supplies, spare parts and retail stock for beach towns where trucks take all day. We keep remote lodges, sodas and surf shops stocked — flight by flight.

    Limits & restrictions

    Small aircraft, firm rules.

Cargo rides on twelve-seat Cessna Caravans, so weight, size and safety are managed carefully. Here's what fits — and what stays on the ground.

    Weight & size limits

    • Standard parcels up to 30 lb (14 kg) each — the everyday courier size
    • Larger consignments up to ~100 lb (45 kg) carried on request and space-permitting
    • Each piece must fit the cargo pod door — roughly 40 × 30 × 30 cm for standard parcels
    • Load depends on passengers, fuel and aircraft balance that day — big items may fly next departure
    • Pack securely and label clearly — soft, well-sealed packaging fits the hold best

    Prohibited & dangerous goods

    • Explosives, fireworks, flares, ammunition and firearms
    • Flammable liquids and gases — fuel, paint, aerosols, camping canisters, lighters in bulk
    • Loose lithium batteries and power banks shipped on their own
    • Corrosives, compressed gas, toxic or infectious substances (except cleared medical samples)
    • Illegal wildlife, drugs, cash and any goods restricted under Costa Rican or DGAC rules

If you're unsure, ask before you pack

Dangerous-goods rules on light aircraft are strict and non-negotiable — they keep passengers and crew safe. If your shipment contains batteries, chemicals, medical materials or anything you're not certain about, call SANSA Cargo before drop-off and we'll tell you how to send it safely, or whether it can fly at all.

    How it works

    Four steps, often one day.

Because your parcel flies on scheduled passenger departures, it moves the moment there's a flight — no separate freight routes, no waiting for a full truck.

Drop off or we pick up

Bring your parcel to our cargo counter at SJO, or book a pickup in the Central Valley. We weigh, label and give you a tracking number on the spot.

    Fly on the next flight

Your shipment loads onto the next scheduled departure to its destination and rides in the Caravan's cargo pod, subject to weight and balance.

    Arrive same-day

Twenty-five to fifty-five minutes later it lands on the coast — most parcels dropped off in the morning reach their destination by the afternoon.

    Collect or deliver

Your recipient collects it at the destination airstrip with ID and the tracking number, or we arrange local delivery to the door for a fee.

Rates: by weight & route — quoted on request

Cargo pricing is set by weight, dimensions, route and how urgently it needs to fly — a single envelope to Tamarindo costs very differently from a 40 kg consignment to Puerto Jiménez. Tell us what and where, and SANSA Cargo will quote it the same business day. Same-day priority, cold-chain handling and door delivery are available at additional cost.

    Cargo FAQ

    Sending something? Start here.

How fast can a package really arrive?

Most parcels dropped off in the morning fly the same day and reach their coastal destination by the afternoon — the flight itself is only 25 to 55 minutes. Arrival depends on the day's departure schedule and available load, and on remote routes there may be one or two flights a day rather than many, so earlier drop-off means a better chance of same-day delivery.

How much does it cost to send a parcel?

There's no flat rate — cargo is priced by weight, size, route and urgency, so a document to Tamarindo and a heavy box to Golfito are quoted differently. Send us the details and we'll give you a firm quote the same business day. Add-ons like same-day priority, refrigerated handling and door-to-door delivery carry an extra charge.

Can you ship perishables like fish or medical samples?

Yes — fresh fish and seafood, produce, flowers, vaccines and time-sensitive lab and medical samples are among our most common cargo. Because the flight is short, the cold chain stays intact. Pack them in sealed, leak-proof insulated packaging and let us know at drop-off so we handle and prioritize them correctly.

How does my recipient collect the shipment?

At most destinations the recipient collects the parcel at the airstrip cargo desk, presenting a photo ID and the tracking number from your receipt. Prefer door delivery? We arrange local last-mile delivery to an address in the destination town for an added fee — just ask when you book the shipment.

    What can't I send?

Dangerous goods can't fly on our light aircraft: explosives, fireworks, firearms and ammunition, fuel and other flammables, loose lithium batteries and power banks, compressed or toxic gases, corrosives, and anything illegal or restricted under Costa Rican and DGAC regulations. Cleared medical samples are an exception when properly declared. If you're unsure, call SANSA Cargo before you pack.
